How to Keep Your Greenhouse Warm Without Breaking the Bank: Fall and Winter Heat Strategies

This is one of those questions that comes up every fall without fail, and for good reason! The difference between a greenhouse that keeps producing through winter and one that loses its crops to an unexpected hard freeze often comes down to a few smart decisions made before the cold actually arrives.
The good news is that keeping a greenhouse warm in winter doesn't automatically mean a big electricity bill or a complicated heating system. There's actually a whole spectrum of options, from completely free (yay!) passive strategies to simple low-cost additions, to active supplemental heat, and for most growers the right answer is a combination of a few things rather than one big solution.
Here's how I'd think about it, starting from the basics and building up from there.

Start Here: Your Structure Is the First Step to Keep Your Greenhouse Warm in Winter
Before you think about adding any heat source, it's worth recognizing that your greenhouse or high tunnel is already doing a lot of work. Even without any supplemental heat, a well-maintained structure keeps the temperature inside significantly warmer than outside — often 10 to 20 degrees warmer on a cold night, sometimes more depending on conditions.
That temperature buffer is what makes cool-season growing possible well into fall and winter for crops like spinach, kale, and lettuce. On most nights, you don't need to do anything beyond having the structure in place. The challenges come on the coldest nights of the year, or in climates where winter temperatures regularly drop into the teens or lower.
So before anything else: make sure your structure is actually doing its job. Check your poly film for holes or areas where it's gone loose. Seal any gaps around doors and end wall connections. A leaky greenhouse loses heat fast, and no amount of supplemental heat makes up for it efficiently. Frost Cloth: The Simplest and Most Affordable Extra Layer
If I had to recommend one thing to every greenhouse grower heading into their first winter, it would be frost cloth. It's inexpensive, easy to use, and effective — draping it over your beds on the coldest nights adds several degrees of protection right at the plant level, which is exactly where you need it.
Frost cloth works by trapping the heat that radiates up from the soil overnight, creating a warmer microclimate just around your plants. It's breathable so it won't cause moisture issues, and it's light enough that most plants support it without any additional framing. For cool-season crops that are already cold-hardy — spinach, kale, arugula — frost cloth on the worst nights is often all you need to bridge the gap.
Think of it as a second greenhouse inside your greenhouse. Your structure handles the bulk of the cold, and the frost cloth handles the worst of the overnight drops.
Thermal Mass: Free Heat Storage Using What You Already Have
Thermal mass is a concept that sounds complicated but is actually pretty simple: certain materials absorb heat during the day and release it slowly at night, smoothing out the temperature swings that can stress plants.
Water is the best thermal mass material available. Black-painted 55-gallon drums filled with water, positioned where they'll get direct sun during the day, can store a surprising amount of heat and release it steadily overnight. Growers with small structures can accomplish the same thing on a smaller scale with dark-painted jugs or buckets — the principle is the same.
This doesn't replace supplemental heat in a climate with severe winters, but it does reduce how much you need and takes some of the edge off those overnight temperature drops. It's also essentially free once you have the containers, which makes it one of the best bang-for-your-buck winter strategies available.
Another thermal mass strategy that's easy to overlook is black ground cover. Dark-colored ground cover absorbs heat from the sun during the day and transfers it into the soil, which then radiates that warmth back up through the night. It's the same principle as the black water barrels, just applied at ground level. If you're already running ground cover for weed control and moisture management — which we recommend anyway — choosing black ground cover means you're getting that heat-retention benefit at no extra cost. It's one of those things that quietly does multiple jobs at once.

Sealing Air Leaks: The Heating Dollar You Don't Have to Spend
If you do run supplemental heat, the single most cost-effective thing you can do is make sure you're not heating the outside. Check door seals, end wall connections, and any gaps where the poly meets the baseboards or frame. Even small gaps can let a lot of heat out overnight, especially when the wind is blowing.
Weatherstripping, foam tape, and poly repair tape are all inexpensive ways to tighten things up before winter. We've found that growers who address air leaks before turning on supplemental heat see a meaningful drop in how long the heater actually runs — which directly translates to lower operating costs.
When to Add Supplemental Heat
For a lot of growers in milder climates, the strategies above are enough to get through winter with cool-season crops intact. But if you're in an area with extended hard freezes, or if you want to keep warm-season crops going through winter, you'll need some form of supplemental heat.
A properly sized propane or electric heater, set to a low threshold — just warm enough to keep temperatures above freezing for cold-hardy crops, or above 50°F for warm-season crops — is the most common solution. The key word is "properly sized." An undersized heater runs constantly and still can't keep up on the coldest nights. An oversized one costs more to run than it needs to. Matching Your Strategy to Your Goals
The right heat strategy really depends on what you're trying to accomplish:
Cool-season crops through winter (spinach, kale, lettuce, greens) — Your structure plus frost cloth on the hardest nights is usually enough in most climates. Add thermal mass for extra buffer. Most growers can get through winter without supplemental heat for these crops.
Extended season into early winter and late winter — Frost cloth, thermal mass, and good air sealing will carry you further than you might expect. A small backup heater for the very worst nights gives you peace of mind without major operating costs.
Year-round growing including warm-season crops — You'll need reliable supplemental heat. A properly sized system with a thermostat is the most practical approach.

The growers who do best through winter are the ones who layer their approach — a well-maintained structure, frost cloth on the worst nights, thermal mass where it's practical, no air leaks, and supplemental heat only as a backup or for specific crop goals.
