Condensation & Humidity Control in a Winter Greenhouse

If you've ever walked into your greenhouse on a cold morning and found the inside of the plastic dripping wet, you already know what I'm talking about. Condensation is one of those things that seems minor at first, but if you let it go all winter, it can turn into real problems — mold, mildew, fungal disease, even rot on your plants and your structure.

The good news is that greenhouse condensation control isn't complicated once you understand why it happens. Here's what's going on and how to keep it in check.

Why Winter Greenhouses Get So Much Condensation

Plants release moisture into the air as they grow (it's called transpiration), and on top of that you've got moisture from watering and from the soil itself. In summer, that moisture escapes easily through open vents and doors. In winter, everything is closed up tighter to hold in heat, so that warm, moist air has nowhere to go. When it hits the cold plastic or glass, it condenses — same reason a cold glass of tea sweats on a summer day.

It's usually worse overnight than during the day. Once the sun goes down, the temperature difference between the warm, humid air inside and the cold glazing surface gets bigger, so that's when you'll typically see the heaviest condensation — and it's often still sitting there dripping when you walk in the next morning.


What Humidity Level Should You Actually Aim For

A simple hygrometer (they're cheap and worth having) takes the guesswork out of this. Most crops do well somewhere in the 40-70% relative humidity range. Above that, you're firmly in mold-and-mildew territory. But it's worth knowing that too low is also a problem — running a heater dries the air out fast, and overly dry conditions stress plants and roll out the welcome mat for spider mites. The goal isn't to eliminate humidity entirely, just to keep it in that middle range instead of letting it swing to either extreme.


Why It's Worth Paying Attention To

●      Constant moisture on leaves creates the perfect environment for fungal disease and mold

●      Dripping condensation can chill or waterlog plants directly underneath it

●      High humidity slows a plant's ability to take up nutrients properly

●      Excess moisture indoors can eventually damage wood framing or hardware over time


Greenhouse Condensation Control: Tips That Actually Work

●      Crack a vent or door for 15-20 minutes on milder days, even in winter — a little airflow makes a big difference

●      First thing in the morning, open up for a few minutes to let overnight moisture escape before it sits on your plants all day

●      Water in the morning instead of evening, so moisture has all day to evaporate before the cold night air sets in

●      Water the soil directly rather than the leaves whenever you can

●      Space plants out a bit more than you would in summer so air can move between them

●      A small circulating fan running on a timer keeps air moving and cuts down on stagnant, humid pockets

●      Avoid overwatering — cold soil doesn't dry out nearly as fast as warm soil does


Two Structural Upgrades That Make a Real Difference

Beyond day-to-day habits, a couple of setup choices go a long way toward cutting down on condensation before it even starts:

●      Black ground cover instead of exposed soil — bare dirt floors release a surprising amount of moisture into the air as it evaporates. Covering the ground cuts that moisture off at the source, and it warms up in the sun to add a little extra heat, plus it keeps weeds down

●      A two layer inflated poly film system — running two layers of plastic with a small blower keeping air inflated between them works a lot like double-pane glass. That air gap insulates the inside layer, so it stays warmer and closer to the inside air temperature. Less of a temperature gap means less condensation forms on the plastic in the first place

Both of these are things we build into our kits, and if you're dealing with a lot of condensation in an older or single-layer setup, they're worth considering as an upgrade.

When to Really Worry

A little condensation on a cold morning is normal and not something to stress over. What you're watching for is condensation that never clears during the day, a musty smell, or any fuzzy white or gray patches on leaves or soil. If you see those signs, that's your cue to increase airflow and cut back on watering right away, before it spreads.


A Few Final Thoughts

Greenhouse condensation control really just comes down to giving that moisture somewhere to go. A few minutes of ventilation and a little more thought about when and how you water goes a long way toward keeping your winter greenhouse healthy — for your plants and for the structure itself.
